WA Treasurer and Member for Victoria Park, the Hon. Ben Wyatt MLA, today turns the first sod to mark the construction commencement of SwanCare’s $55 million investment into retirement living and aged care at Bentley Park.
SwanCare Ningana residential care facility will be built in parallel with the Leisure Precinct development, providing exceptional state of the art facilities on the 15 hectare Bentley Park site.
“I am delighted that SwanCare is investing into such a valuable service for our Victoria Park community,” Mr Wyatt said. “SwanCare is an important community organisation and this development will ensure that they can continue to provide fantastic resources for the residents of Bentley Park.
“I congratulate and thank the Board of SwanCare for a significant decision and investing in the long term future of our community."
SwanCare CEO Mr Graham Francis said as a community-based and not-for-profit organisation, the investment marks an exciting and momentous time for SwanCare.
“Today we celebrate SwanCare’s substantial investment in retirement and aged care - an investment which will provide significant supportive infrastructure to the area and continue the valuable service SwanCare provides to the local community,” Mr Francis said.
“The scope of this project is significant, with considerable flow-on effects throughout the community. At peak, the construction project will create 250 jobs and yet another 80 direct jobs upon completion,” he continued.
“That SwanCare is in a position to undertake this scale of development and invest in the future of the retirement and aged care sector speaks volumes for the five decades of experience and dedication that SwanCare has invested in our residents,” he concluded.
ADCO Constructions has been selected as the project builder and will build the SwanCare Ningana aged care facility and Leisure Precinct projects concurrently.
SwanCare CEO Mr Graham Francis said the competitive tender process was followed to ensure the highest level of integrity was achieved and the selection of ADCO Constructions will deliver the very best value for SwanCare in the greatest number of areas, including pricing.
“We are very excited about the prospect of working with ADCO in the forthcoming 18 months as we deliver two massive projects that will change the landscape of the SwanCare Bentley Park site,” Mr Francis said. “This project will result in improved leisure and care services, providing not just for our current residents, but for the many future generations of residents that will call SwanCare home.”
The future SwanCare Ningana is a 124-room care facility and will be the fourth residential care facility at Bentley Park, complementing and expanding upon the existing 280 beds currently on the site.
The new facility will allow SwanCare to provide a contemporary accommodation option to future residents, and relieve anticipated future pressure on the occupancy of current facilities.
The Leisure Precinct project will contribute to SwanCare’s vibrant community, with a nod to the interests of the modern retiree. Many of the leisure facilities will be located in close proximity, encouraging residents, families and groups to congregate in a contemporary and comfortable social hub.
“In SwanCare’s fifth decade of providing quality care to Western Australian seniors, we are delighted to continue to innovate and look to the future,” Mr Francis said. “These projects form the first stage in the progression of our vibrant community masterplan, offering contemporary accommodation and services to current and future residents.”
Construction will be staged over a 70 week build.
About SwanCare Ningana
SwanCare’s new 124-room aged care facility incorporates extensive research in dementia-specific aged care design. The facility will be named SwanCare Ningana, echoing SwanCare’s past as construction will take place on the site of the former Ningana Nursing Home, built in 1969 and demolished earlier this year.
The new design concept imitates the familiar concepts in the outside world, offering the analogy of a home, street, neighbourhood, village and town. Clusters of eight to ten rooms share dining, living and kitchenette areas and a protected winter garden allowing access to the outdoors and taking a whole-of-building approach to dementia care.
The circulation layout is simple, designed around an active central courtyard with few ‘decision points’, reducing possibilities for confusion, and encouraging daylight and natural ventilation.
Reflecting the need identified by SwanCare for some larger rooms that might be occupied by singles, couples or siblings, the facility offers choice and an environment that is purpose-built to keep people together in the latter part of their life.
The centre will encompass four levels plus a basement, offering clearly defined shared and private spaces for both staff and residents and a diverse range of indoor and outdoor amenities.
Driven by the ideas of community, activity and sustainability, SwanCare’s two-story leisure centre is designed for the modern retiree, incorporating a library, gymnasium, indoor heated pool, fitness centre, club room and resident lounge, and multi-functional rooms.
Forming a comprehensive Leisure Precinct, the centre will be complemented with a separate community pavilion, sound and light gardens and improved walkways.
The redeveloped landscaped areas will encompass improved pedestrian linkages - drawing activities together and creating connectivity for residents and visitors alike in the heart of Bentley Park.
A three-level car park, a refurbishment of parts of the Mavis Cleaver Court building and reconfigured resident car parking areas will also add to the leisure precinct.
